HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Royal City Planing Mills (RCPM) established an operation east of Elgin near the Nicomekl River to log the areas south of the Kensington Prairie. In 1886, a logging railway was built east through Grandview Heights. At the west end of the line, logs were dumped into a ditch and floated into the Nicomekl River. In 1886, the RCPM bought the famous steam locomotive "Old Curly" from the CPR. Originally a part of the San Francisco seawall construction project, the locomotive hauled timber along the logging railway and stayed in use in Surrey until 1894.










When the New Westminster and Southern Railway was completed in 1891, the logging railway was extended to join it at a point east of Hall's Prairie Road. Consequently, the Nicomekl River was abandoned and the logs were railed to Port Kells and boomed in the Fraser.

The area remained sparsely populated for quite some time until the Morgan Crossing Development brought new life to the area, for which it won a Georgie Award for Best Multi-Family Low Rise Development in 2011.

GETTING TO, FROM
& AROUND GRANDVIEW

Whether you drive your car or plan to take transit to school and shopping, Grandview is an easy place to get to and from. Public transportation via Translink’s South Surrey & White Rock Buses makes it easy to travel to schools and shopping centres, while commuter buses provide easy access for those working in Richmond or Vancouver.

Students who are residents of the cities of Surrey or White Rock, and who meet the criteria, will be considered eligible for regular School Bus Transportation to and from the school which has been designated by the Superintendent of Schools to serve their residence.

If driving is your transportation of choice, you’ll find Grandview is accessible by Highways 99 and 91 from the Greater Vancouver area, and via Highway 15 from the Fraser Valley.  You can then easily access Grandview using the 8B and 16th Avenue exits off Highway 99, and via 24th Avenue, turning right off of Highway 15.

There is no shortage or year-round recreation, entertainment and things to do in Grandview.  Not to mention all the shopping!

Art lovers and those wanting to get their kids involved in the arts will find plenty of choice at Arts Umbrella.  This not-for-profit arts education centre provides instruction in visual and digital arts, music, theatre and dance to children and youth. In addition, they also offer reduced rates on programming for kids with cultural or financial barriers.  

If you’re looking to browse artworks by Canadian painters or find hand-made one-of-a-kind furniture pieces by local artists, head over to the Jenkins Showler Art Gallery.

Worry not health and fitness enthusiasts – Grandview has some amazing facilities for you, too! The Grandview Heights Aquatics Centre, set to open in the fall of 2015, will come with a standard Olympic size competition pool, a leisure and lifestyle pool with a lazy river feature, spray features, and a tot’s area.  Too long to mention in one sentence, you’ll also find world-class diving facilities, hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, a water slide, and a spectator seating area rounding out the rest of the centres offerings.

For working out, the Steve Nash Fitness Sports Club is a 40,000 square foot gym facility, with a Steve Nash pro-shop, and a Kids Zone.  If you’re looking to heal or keep up your overall body health, the Morgan Crossing Sports Medicine offers integrated multi-disciplinary sports medicine services including physiotherapy, chiropractic, registered massage therapy, athletic therapy, and a sport/exercise medicine physician. And, for personal training programs above the rest, Innovative Fitness delivers the industry’s highest level of training to get members the results they are looking for.

Finally, for some cultural events, Wine Tastings are held regularly at Everything Wine, with each event focusing on wine from a different region.  Then there is the outdoor Kid’s Movie Nights during the summer months at The Shops at Morgan Crossing.  And cap off the year with Light up the Clocktower, a holiday celebration that includes a Christmas tree display, a holiday train, live entertainment and crafts.

Head outdoors to experience a park that integrates stormwater and habitat features.  Morgan Heights Linear Park provides a great path for walking, running, cycling or inline skating. It provides ease-of-walkability and features plantings, seating areas, and public art installations.  

For a park with a children's playground incorporating both natural and play elements, Oliver Park is the place for you.  And if you’re looking for something with a natural conservation area with gravel trails and a duck pond, then Greenridge Park is on your list for sure.
